What’s up internet, it is your boy Eric Handhold back again with another awesome episode from Beard brand. Hope all is going well on the other side of the internet. Wanted to do a video on personal freedom and entrepreneurship. So I’m very passionate about entrepreneurship. One of the things and beyond beards and style and travel and all the things I like is actually building a business and being part of the entrepreneurship community. And one of the ways that you can achieve personal freedom is by starting up your own business.
And what that allows you to do is set your own schedule, set your own location, put the people around you who you want to be around. You completely control all these aspects of your lives. Whoyou’re working with, who you’re living with, everything is in your control. So you’re free to do anything. There are a lot of challenges with being an entrepreneur, while you may control your business aspect of things you still report to your customers and your customers really are driving how you should act and interact. So when you start a business, I want to kind of give you two options.
There’s one option which is the traditional entrepreneur where you start a business and you own everything, and then the other option is you find an organization that you work for, and you work within an entrepreneurial role. One of my friends works for an ad agency here in town and he’s started up a new division there where they created their own software. And the beauty of that is he’s getting a salary, he’s getting regular income and he’s still getting the experience of creating a business and creating an application, without the same amount of risk as something like I’m doing where the wife gets mad at me if we don’t sell enough beard oil for a month or whatever it may be.
So there are risks like that. So there are opportunities to be an entrepreneur while working for the man. So don’t completely eliminate that option from your career, especially if you have a family, you have 3 or 4 kids, there are entrepreneurial roles out there and there are organisationslooking for people who are entrepreneurs who are looking to set up things and grow things. So take that in mind. But really what I would recommend, if you want to get started you’ve got to put yourself around people who are entrepreneurial.
So how I personally did its I got involved in Start Up Weekends which are national events where essentially you’ll try to start up a business over the course of the weekend, and it’s a great way to meet other people who want to start up businesses, it’s a great way to find out who works hard and eventually does what they say they’re going to do, who are doers rather than talkers, and it helps you get ideas too.You know, I wouldn’t really expect going to one of those events as walking away with your own business and going from there. Sometimes that happens, but that’s really not the purpose.
The purpose is more of just getting you involved in the community. Beyond that there’s a lot of other small networking events, for instance I don’t know if you guys have figured this out, I’m very passionate about libertarianism and I’ve joined a community here in town called SOLE, The Society Of Libertarian Entrepreneurs. So I’m able to align with people who are philosophically on the same wavelength as me, and also who are passionate about building their business. So all these things give you opportunities to be around other like-minded people.
And entrepreneurship is hard. There are a lot of people who do it alone and find success, however, me personally I found that a team is a requirement to build a strong company because what’s going to happen is you’re going to have these highs and these lows as you build the company and you’re going to need people to help you raise your lows, and then when you’re high you’re going to help your partners, pick them up on their lows.
